We delightedly welcomed our President Valerie Masterson C.B.E.’
on Sunday 2nd September at the Birch Hotel Haywards Heath

The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Sussex welcomed its President, the one and only Valerie Masterson CBE.   This was Valerie's first visit, and we were thrilled to have her in our midst.   She no longer sings in public, but is an accomplished speaker, and told us about her early days growing up in Cheshire, how she was discovered by a TV talent show, and the faith shown in her by Sir Malcolm Sargent, who recommended her to The Royal College of Music.   From there she went to the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, where she made her name, and then in to grand opera, where she sang to great acclaim at Glyndebourne, Covent Garden, and major opera houses throughout Europe and beyond.   She played us recordings of favourite roles, and it was easy to hear why she was in such demand.   The afternoon flew by, and we look forward to a return visit.
